Natural Cancer Solutions

As we all know, cancer has become the leading cause of death, especially in the western world, where modern medicine struggles to combat this suite of diseases. For this reason, many are looking for a more natural approach which does not involve poisoning the body, or cutting out vital organs. Here we are going to discuss information on what causes cancer, and alternate solutions to the less than adequate ones offered by mainstream medicine.

History Of Cancer

In 1907, less than 7% of Australians died from cancer. Today 50% of men and 33% of women will get cancer at some time in their lives. This figure is rising, and there is no great improvement in cure rates, despite claims by drug companies and cancer research organisations that they are about to discover the cure for this or that disease. The evening news is full of these stories, although most of the “breakthroughs” either don’t work, or are proven more dangerous than the cancer they prevent and are consequently abandoned.

Given that this is happening, it would be good to try to figure out what has changed in society to cause these alarming figures. Could it be that it is lifestyle related, or is there an environmental cause that mutates otherwise healthy cells?

Causes of Cancer

The information below was taken from the Cancer Council of Australia website.

“We do not know all of the risks and causes of cancer. However, there are a number of chemical, physical and biological agents that have been shown to trigger the mistakes in the cell blueprint that cause cancer. These are called carcinogens and include tobacco, ultraviolet radiation and asbestos.

“A number of cancers share risk factors:

  • one in nine cancers, and one in five cancer deaths, are due to smoking
  • about 3% of cancers are related to alcohol consumption
  • many cancers occur as a direct result of dietary influences, from infectious agents or exposure to radiation (especially skin cancers from ultraviolet radiation)
  • some cancers result from inherited ‘faulty’ genes
  • cancer is NOT caused by injury or stress.

“It is important to note that not all cancers are associated to the risk factors mentioned above. Cancer can sometimes develop without any specific causes”.

The good news here is that according to the “experts”, stress and injury are not responsible. While that may be the case, I would suggest that stress puts a strain on the immune system, and a less than fully functioning immune system means that the body’s natural cancer fighting mechanisms are compromised. It highlights the way medicine looks at a situation, where a direct cause and cure is required to fit into the model.

As for smoking, cigarette smoke has concentrated levels of a heavy metal, Cadmium. The information about food and diet is vague at best, possibly because the food industry is very powerful and would not react kindly to any inference they may be responsible for cancer.

Environmental Influence

One thing that has changed over the last century is the volume and number of toxic chemicals we use in our daily lives. For some reason Cancer researchers seem to ignore this factor completely. No wonder they can’t discover a cure! Household cleaners are a concoction of poisonous chemicals. Industrialisation has resulted in permanently polluted air and water, and modern food production has resulted in some very dubious additives to extend the shelf life of food, and make it look good. In agriculture, crops are constantly sprayed to kill off bugs and diseases. Then there is mining.

Certain toxins such as heavy metals and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are very difficult to remove from the body. We were simply not designed to handle them. There are medical chelators to remove heavy metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium and others, but these are expensive and like most medications can cause serious long term damage to your health. You will find most medical professionals not interested in toxicity either because of less than adequate solutions, or the fact they have been told this is not a health issue. Toxicity has now become intergenerational with many of us having weakened immune systems due to genetic factors to compound the situation. The rise of autism spectrum is an example of this.

Medical Solutions to Cancer

There are 3 main ways that mainstream medicine attempts to conquer cancer.

  1. Operations. Here the tumour is identified and then cut out by surgery. If the whole of the cancer is removed, this can be effective. If the tumour is in a sensitive area, it is often impossible to remove it without permanent and debilitating results. If the cause of the disease is not removed, there is often a reoccurrence a year or two later, and each time it is more difficult to treat.
  2. Chemotherapy. This is where a toxic drug is taken to kill off mutated or weak cells. Unfortunately, the chemo drug weakens immunity and kills off some good cells as well. The idea is to reduce the infection or tumour and slow it down. Opinion on this treatment is divided. For those who survived it is a miracle that kept them from certain death. For those who didn’t, they are not here to talk about it! For many others, the cancer returns a year or two later with devastating results, or they end up permanently disabled from the treatment. Many Doctors would not opt for this treatment if they were diagnosed with cancer.
  3. Radiation. It is well known that radiation damages cells. Fukushima in Japan and Chernobyl in Russia were two situations where large populations were exposed to radiation. Many of these people have died from cancer since. With this in mind, why would you radiate a cancerous tumor as a treatment? Again the idea is to kill off cancerous or damaged cells in an infected area and hope the body will recover itself and repair or expel the cells damaged by the treatment.

The Cancer Industry

These days massive amounts of money are being raised for cancer research. Many well-meaning cancer survivors passionately solicit donations to support these funds. While this seems noble, one would have to question why there have not been the results they were seeking. Richard Nixon famously announced there would be a cure for cancer in 10 years back in 1971. Today cancer is much more prevalent and survival rates for some are abysmal following treatment. In fact many people are now told there is nothing that can be done except to provide ineffective treatments that will cause much suffering for their final months of life and to go home. Clearly the “war” on cancer has not been won. In the meantime heads of cancer organisations earn huge salaries. These are only maintained as long as a cure for cancer is not found, so there is incentive to keep announcing breakthroughs while never finding a permanent solution.

Can Cancer Be Cured?

Given the limited success of medicine to tackle this disease, many now look to alternate solutions. There are many on offer, and they focus on repairing the body rather than poisoning it. It is a bit like organic farming where with the proper care crops thrive, while intensive farming produces higher yields for a while and then destroys the land. Your body is composed of cells which combine to make tissue. Tissue makes up organs and the sum total of all of this is your body.

When cells are attacked by toxins, they can become mutated, or genetically altered. Sometimes this is duplicated through large numbers of cells, resulting in cancer. You can protect your cells in three ways.

  1. Make sure you limit the amount of toxins you take into your body. You do this by eating mainly raw or organic food, unprocessed. Use non chemical cleaners and carefully choose where you live.
  2. Take action to remove toxins from the body. Like it or not, you have them. Detox programs can reduce the toxic load on the body giving you a fighting chance of avoiding the consequences. A recent Catalyst program on ABC TV in Australia really exposed the extent of toxins we consume every day.
  3. Add support to your immune system. Despite what the health authorities say, simply eating fruit and vegetables is not enough to give you a really strong immune system, especially considering today’s toxic environment. There are some great products that will increase the function and potency of your immune system, giving you greater protection. Very few cover the full spectrum of nutrients you need for optimum health.

What Are Some Of The Alternate Ways To Reduce Cancer?

Ways to combat cancer are centered around a few concepts. One is to starve the cancer cells of the food that fuels growth. A diet very low in carbohydrates and especially sugar is one thing I would definitely do if I had cancer. Herbs are used to kill cancerous cells. As with chemotherapy, but without some of the toxic side effects, certain herbs will destroy weak cells, while leaving healthy ones alone.

Here are a few herbs that people may use in the fight against cancer. Copied from canceractive dot com.

20 Herbs that can fight cancer

Here are twenty herbs that just might help your fight against cancer. You will be pleased to know, even after May 1st 2011, you can still have them prescribed and made for you by experts working with CANCERactive.
1 ASTRAGALUS (Huang Qi): A Chinese herb; an immune system booster, known to stimulate body´s natural production of interferon. It also helps the immune system identify rogue cells. Work with the herb in both cancer and AIDS cases has been encouraging. The MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Texas conducted research showing that taking Astragalus when having Radiotherapy doubled survival times.
BERBERIS FAMILY (e.g. Podophyllum peltanum): Slow active purgative. Research has shown these herbs to have a strong action against cancer and they have been used with many cancers, especially Ovarian cancer. In CancerWatch March 2015, the herb was shown in research to outperform brain cancer drug, Temozolomide.

BLOODROOT (Sanguinaria canadensis): Research shows consistent anti-neoplastic activity. It has been shown to be effective against cancer tumours, and can shrink them; it is one of the herbs in an anti-cancer poultice called black salve; and has proven useful with sarcomas.

BUTCHERS BROOM (Ruscus aculeatus): The active ingredients of this herb has been found to be the ruscogenins which have tumour-shrinking and anti-oestrogenic abilities. Thus its use in the treatment of breast cancer.

5 CAT´S CLAW (Uncaria tormentosa): An adaptogen and powerful immuno-stimulant, it enhances the white cells clean up process (phagocytosis). It is an excellent companion to astragalus, curcumin and echinacea. Research indicates it can reduce tumour size, particularly with skin cancers. It also helps reduce the side-effects of chemo and radiotherapy.

6 CHAPARRAL (Larrea mexicana): Cancer Watch covered a major research study from the US which heaped praise on this herb. It appears to boost the immune system, stop metastases and reduce tumour size. Seems especially interesting with breast cancer. It is also an anti-oxidant and anti-microbial, with low toxicity.

CURCUMIN (Turmeric): This spice (Curcuma longa or Turmeric root) has been shown to have significant anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory activity. That alone seems enough for certain hospitals in America
to consider using it in the treatment of polyps and colon cancer. However new research shows that it can both shrink cancer tumours and inhibit blood supply growth to tumours. It is a powerful antioxidant with liver protective benefits, and outperformed several anti-inflammatory drugs without side-effects in research.

DANG SHEN ROOT (Codonopsis pilosula): increases both the white blood cell and red blood cell levels, so can be extremely helpful to patients having chemotherapy and radiotherapy, or to patients whose cancer diminishes levels of either.

ECHINACEA: Another known immune system booster, it gained a populist reputation in treating colds.  There is research on its helpfulness with brain tumours apart from its abilities to increase the levels of certain immune white cells in the body.

FEVERFEW: This herb caused a storm when research from Rochester University in New York showed it to be more effective than the drug cytarabine in killing leukaemia cells. The US Food and Drug Agency put the active ingredient, parthenolide, on to its fast track programme. Nothing has yet been heard. But then, the FDA has never approved a herb for use as a cancer treatment.

GOLDENSEAL: One cause of stomach cancer can be the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. This burrows into the mucous lining of the stomach to hide from gastric acids, and then causes irritation, acid reflux, ulcers and even cancer. Goldenseal is generally anti-microbial and is used in the Caribbean and South East Asia against parasites. Goldenseal, helped by the mineral Bismuth, will kill Helicobacter pylori. Vets seem to know this, even if doctors don´t.

MILK THISTLE: Known for years to be helpful to the liver, this herb has now been shown to be capable of protecting the liver during chemotherapy. Research in America showed that leukaemia patients who took milk thistle had reduced liver toxicity and chemo side-effects. There is a little evidence that it has its own anti-cancer activity too.

PAU D´ARCO: This tree bark was original thought to be a strong anti-cancer agent, but then its actions were clarified as strongly anti-bacterial, anti-yeast and anti-microbial. That alone might be enough in some cases of cancer cause. But new research on the differing ingredients has shown the quinoids possess immune strengthening abilities and seem to help in cases of blood and lymph cancers.

RED CLOVER: Research from a number of centres including the Royal Marsden has shown its potential as a part of a treatment programme against oestrogen-driven cancers, from breast to prostate. One active ingredient in the so-called Herb of Hippocrates is the anti-oestrogen Genistein.

SHEEP´S SORRELL: Used in Essiac and other herbal remedies it is a cleanser and aids healthy tissue regeneration. There is some suggestion from research that it helps normalise damaged cells and tissue. It is also a highly praised ´vermifuge´ – intestinal worms have little or no resistance to this herb.

SKULLCAP (Scutellaria barbata): Research has shown action against many cancer types, for example against cancers of the lung, stomach and intestines.

SUTHERLANDIA (Cancer Bush): Peer reviewed research studies indicate that this herb is anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-fungal. It boosts the immune system and inhibits Tumour Necrosis Factor, known to drive wasting in cancer patients.

18 THOROWAX, or HARES EAR (Bulpleurum scorzoneraefolium): Research has shown its ability to enhance the production of natural interferon and it seems especially useful in bone cancer.

WHEATGRASS: One of the top private hospitals in South East Asia extols the benefits of freshly juiced wheatgrass. One shot gives you the chlorophyll of some 12 or more kilograms of broccoli. It acts as a blood purifier, and liver and kidney cleansing agent. After two weeks of daily use, blood and tissue oxygen levels improve, as does circulation. And oxygen is the enemy of the cancer cell, as Otto Warburg told the world.

20 WORMWOOD: Another Chinese Herb, this has outperformed certain anti-malaria drugs and is now used by the aid agencies. It is strongly anti-microbial and anti-yeast and can be used as an effective part of an anti-candida diet. Also certain cancer treatments cause excesses of yeasts to form (for example, in Leukaemia treatment) threatening the patients health further. Excess yeasts are even felt by some cancer experts to be one of the causes of cancer. However, in recent research Wormwood has been shown to have direct anti-cancer properties.

I do not profess to be an herbalist, or expert in the use of herbs, but some of these make sense to me. Herbs often have side effects, so you would be wise to research a herb before taking it.

Cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment. Often a pH reading of someone with cancer will read led than 6.0, going down to under 5, when a healthy person will read at 7.0-7.5. This extreme acidity can be fuelled by overuse of sugar and refined foods. Acidity in the body basically is an indication that there is either too much hydrogen, or not enough oxygen. Free radicals, or toxins, will starve the body of oxygen, leaving an excess of Hydrogen to form acidic compounds.

There are a number of Oxygen products designed to increase flow of oxygen to the cells. In Australia, the authorities don’t like these and many are banned. Imagine allowing poisonous drugs, but not Oxygen! Gives you some idea of what the Cancer companies are up to.

Activated Liquid Zeolite Increases pH

Another way to increase pH is to scavenge excess Hydrogen atoms, bringing the body into balance. One way of doing this effectively is with Natural Zeolite. This mineral sucks up small negatively charged particles without damaging normal body functions. To get into the blood stream it needs to be liquefied and micronized to around 1-2.5 microns in size. Less than 1 or more than 5 is not optimum. Zeolite has a second benefit in that it scavenges heavy metals and many other toxins from the cells, allowing the immune system to repair them.

Removal Of Toxins

Given that toxins are often a cause of cancer, wouldn’t it make sense to remove toxins from the body as a means of prevention? To some this would seem obvious, although when you dig into the subject, you will find many disagree. First, there are the experts like Prof Lesley Campbell of the Garvin Institute in Sydney Australia, who boldly asserts that our bodies detoxify naturally and that any detox program is a waste of time. Then there are the laxatives and medical chelators which, while effective, offer no long term solution and do nothing to repair the damage.

There is Cilantro, charcoal, various herbs plus many other treatment regimes which can remove toxins from the bowel. Many of these will leave you feeling healthier, and by reducing the load on the immune system, you will have some success.

Activated Liquid Zeolite leads the way

We discovered some 8 years ago something that seemed a miracle. As it turns out Zeolite, a mineral found in nature, is perfect for scavenging toxins from the body. When micronized, cleansed and set in liquid, it can enter the blood stream and eliminate toxins from the cells. Over time this truly reduces the body burden from toxins and therefore lessens your chance of contracting cancer and many other diseases.

Zeolite has viral properties as well and it is able to destroy viruses during replication, drastically slowing down the spread of disease. When it comes to cancer, experiments with mice and dogs conclusively showed tumour reductions when they were injected with micronized Zeolite.

The Immune System

While there is no doubt that removing toxins is a primary way to deal with disease naturally, it is good to acknowledge the role the immune system plays in prevention or control of disease. One of the main cancer fighting mechanisms in the immune system are T cells. Production of these is determined by how well nourished the immune cells are, and signals from the individual cells, notifying that there is a need for cleansing.

Certain mushrooms are able to supply support to the immune system. Harvard Medical School in an article suggests it is almost impossible to provide everything the immune system requires for support, so it was interesting to discover Megadefense, a product that combines Zeolite with a number of medicinal mushroom extracts, specifically selected for their synergistic effect on immunity. Having taken that product for over 3 years, the author can attest that it has resulted in greatly reduced incidence of colds and flu.

When it comes to fighting cancer, there are medical methods, and more natural solutions. Some of these, while doing good, also cause long term damage. Others simply either support the body’s natural cancer fighting bodies, or remove the toxins that overburden the cells, leading to breakdown and eventually a cancerous situation.

Whether you are looking to reduce cancer or prevent it, these natural cancer solutions are worth a look.

Detox Is One Way To Prevent Cancer

Within the fashionable world we are confronted with an ever rising menace from heavy metal toxicity. This has evolved from an industrialized world, though there was an enormous lowering of infant mortality. The situation with cancer and different illnesses to which heavy metal toxicity can be a contributing factor, is completely different, with deaths from most cancers up from 7% in the early 1900s to over 1/3rd now and rising. Reducing heavy metal toxicity with liquid zeolite is one approach to cut back your likelihood of getting cancer by removing a number of the deadly toxins that may cause it. Heavy metals are implicated in CFS, Alzheimer’s Disease, MS, Parkinson’s, dementia, and an entire host of chronic diseases. Using liquid zeolite to remove these substances from the body tissue makes total sense as a way to keep yourself free of the causes of many serious health issues.

There are lots of technologies that are meant to help us in sustaining vital well being and liquid zeolite is certainly one of these. Many ask what’s liquid zeolite? Zeolites are formed in volcanoes. They are negatively charged in nature and form a hollow construction. They capture heavy metals and toxins in the physique and safely take them away. For this fact, many are now turning to liquid zeolite as a way to maintain their bodies free of toxins. The process of changing Zeolite into a liquid is one in which you first micronize the powder to less than 5 microns, then cleanse it of all toxins, and at last mix it in filtered water so it may cross into the blood stream.

Anyone studying this data could also be curious to know what are zeolites? The reply to that is that hundreds of years in the past there were large volcanic eruptions. After the lava cooled some elements shaped as rocks, and a small number maintained unique properties of being negatively charged in nature. There are three different classes of Zeolite. One consists of asbestos, and is obviously unsafe. The third, or sheath like zeolites, are the ones which have been certified as safe by the FDA within the USA. Of those Clinoptilolite is known to be totally safe. Scientists saw positive outcomes in sows who had zeolite added to their meals, and zeolite is now used for water filtration and decontaminating soil, including nuclear disasters at Chernobyl. Not too long ago liquid zeolite was formulated to enhance the impact on humans.

We all know there are a lot of cancer cures touted across the internet and elsewhere. While mainstream medicine offers an inadequate record with keeping cancer victims alive, many associate most cancers and liquid zeolite as a way to stop and even manage cancer. Research in Romania produced reductions in tumors when canine had been injected with micronized zeolite powder. The very fact is that toxins are a significant explanation for cancer, and many scientists agree to this, although some completely ignore the fact. As liquid zeolite removes heavy metals from the body and reduces our poisonous load, it is smart to make use of it as a cancer fighting method. Provided that cancer is caused by mutated cells and that cells are mutated by poisonous chemical compounds and heavy metals, it is smart to take away these toxins to allow the immune system to do its job and maintain our health . Liquid zeolite is an ideal option to achieve this aim.

Over the previous few years cigarette smoke has been gradually decreased, despite the efforts of the cigarette corporations. One of the principal toxins present in tobacco smoke is Cadmium, and this has caused many lung and health illnesses, even in passive smokers. Today, people who smoke congregate in outside areas, so all of us get exposed. Liquid zeolite is a way to remove cadmium from your body to stop damage from smoking, notably passive smoking. Whereas not talked about that often, it can be crucial you know your body is free from cadmium as it could be a strong indicator of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

Heavy metals comparable to cadmium, arsenic, lead, mercury, aluminium and others, are a real threat to yourhealth. When they get into our bodies by way of the air we breathe, water we drink, or meals we eat, they connect to our cells, inhibiting uptake of nutritional vitamins and minerals. This may increasingly result in cancer or other critical diseases. The affiliation of liquid zeolite and heavy metals goes back some time. Research shows that liquid zeolite eliminates heavy metals from cells safely. In people a study published in 2009 clearly showed that those that used activated liquid zeolite had a rise in heavy metals excreted by way of the urine within a number of days of using this product.

There are many conditions for which liquid zeolite is a very good way to enhance your vitality. Certainly one of these is the idea of liquid zeolite and mercury poisoning. Mercury is a very dangerous heavy metal, It’s found in prawns, amalgam fillings, chocolate, and lots of other grocery items. Coal popwer generation facilities emit mercury and water run-off from coal mining accommodates mercury as well. In essence, most of us are affected by mercury in some way. In the olden days Mercury was used in hat making, resulting in the term, “mad as a hatter”. Mercury causes interference to the mind and nervous system. Research proves that liquid zeolite removes mercury from our cells and eliminates it by means of the kidneys in a couple of hours. Over time levels are reduced, limiting the damage of this most harmful toxic substance.

In the modern day world, we are confronted with severe issues by our very lifestyle. There are over 70,000 chemical compounds used in trade, agriculture, food processing and these have an effect on nearly every area of our lives. If you purchase food it’s laced with heavy metals and other poisonous compounds. Liquid zeolite presents an efficient solution to remove these, particularly heavy metals. If you consume liquid zeolite as a part of your everyday regime, just a few drops ensure you aren’t increasing the extent of poisons in your body. Detoxing with liquid zeolite makes complete sense as a method to combat these issues, and when you see the adjustments in your energy levels and state of -being, you’ll become a convert as well.

Autism spectrum is a strange disease. There are numerous theories on what causes this starting from hereditary elements to toxins. Many connect the presence of heavy metals with autism. Can autism be alleviated with liquid zeolite? The word remedy is an emotional one, solely to be used by mainstream medicine. While there is proof that those consuming liquid zeolite show vastly lowered signs of autistic behaviour, it is not the case for all people. Knowing the shortage of success with numerous remedies, and the fact heavy metals are a factor, using liquid zeolite will not hurt and it simply would possibly work along side other treatments.

Dr Steven Gale of the University of Sydney produced a research report on the effects of lead poisoning. Dr Gale said that even at low levels, lead can be dangerous to learning. In Mt Isa, Australia, children usually are not even diagnosed for lead poisoning unless it is not less than 10 times the limit imposed by government medical departments. Lead causes learning difficulties and is still present in car fuel. children who dwell near major roads are inclined to have a lower IQ than everyone else. A study demonstrated that liquid zeolite absorbs lead and removes it from the body. Lead was found in pencils, is emitted in smelters, and stays on the ground for a protracted time.

Managing side effects of chemotherapy

The following article is taken from the Victorian Cancer Council website at

The most important effect of chemotherapy is that it kills cancer cells. However, chemotherapy can also affect normal cells that rapidly divide and grow, such as those in the bone marrow, digestive tract, skin, hair and reproductive organs. When normal cells are damaged, this can cause side effects. This page discusses the most common side effects people experience and offers suggestions to help manage them.

It’s natural to worry about side effects. However, whether or not you experience side effects, and how severe they are, depends on the type of drugs you’ve been prescribed and how you react individually from one treatment period to the next.

Side effects vary greatly. Some people will have no side effects, others will experience a range. If you have side effects, they’ll usually start during the first few weeks of treatment.

Most side effects are temporary and can be managed. They tend to gradually disappear once treatment has stopped.

You should talk to your doctor or nurse before your treatment begins about the side effects you should watch out for or report, and who to contact out of hours if you have immediate concerns.

If the side effects impact on your appearance and self-esteem, you may find it helpful to attend a free Look Good…Feel Better program, which teaches you about using skin care, hats, wigs and cosmetics. To book, call 1800 650 960.

Chemotherapy diary

It can be useful to record information about your chemotherapy treatment in one place so you recall details about any side effects you’re experiencing and what helped to reduce them.

Some people like to write down notes – download a PDF of our Chemotherapy booklet for a blank diary you can fill in and photocopy. Other people choose to record things another way – for example, by using their smartphones.

Share the information you record with your doctors and nurses so they can give you suggestions for dealing with side effects or adjust your treatment, if appropriate.

Feeling tired and lacking energy

Feeling tired and lacking energy (fatigue) is the most common – and often, debilitating – side effect of chemotherapy. Fatigue can include feeling exhausted, drowsy, confused or impatient. You may have a heavy feeling in your limbs, or find it difficult to do daily activities.

Fatigue can appear suddenly and rest may not relieve it. You might still feel tired for weeks or months after a treatment cycle ends.

‘I had no idea that I would still be feeling tired five months after finishing treatment… I didn’t know how to make it better and I was scared that’s how it would be: that I wouldn’t go back to normal, that I would never go back to having energy again.’ — George, bowel cancer

  • Save your energy. Help your body recover by doing less and resting more.
  • Let people help you. Family, friends and neighbours often want to assist but may feel unsure about what to do. They could help with shopping, child-care, driving or housework.
  • If you’re employed, consider whether you could take some time off, reduce your hours or work from home during or after chemotherapy. Some workplaces might allow you to work flexibly around your treatment.
  • If there’s a time during the day when you tend to feel most energetic, try to plan activities during this time.
  • Do light exercise, such as walking. If you have a normal exercise routine and you feel up to it, ask your doctor if you can exercise.
  • Don’t start any new exercise activities until you’ve recovered from treatment.
  • Try to get more sleep at night and take naps during the day if you can.
  • If you aren’t sleeping well, tell your health care team. Only take sleeping pills that are recommended or prescribed by your doctor.
  • Some people benefit from doing relaxation or meditation exercises.
  • Try to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables.
  • Check with your doctor whether your fatigue is related to low red blood cells (anaemia) so that this can be treated.

Loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting

It’s common for your appetite to change when you’re going through chemotherapy. Sometimes you may not feel hungry, or you may not enjoy the foods you used to like. Some treatments temporarily change the taste of foods.

Chemotherapy may make you feel sick (nauseous) or vomit. Not everyone feels sick during or after chemotherapy, but if nausea affects you, it usually starts a few hours after treatment. Nausea may last for many hours and be accompanied by vomiting or retching.

Anti-nausea or anti-vomiting medication can help. This medicine can be taken before, during or after treatment. It may be available as:

  • injections: usually given before chemotherapy
  • tablets: can be taken regularly at home
  • wafers: dissolved under or on top of the tongue
  • suppositories: placed in the rectum where they dissolve
  • liquids: added to the chemotherapy.

Your medical oncologist will tell you if the drugs you’re given are likely to cause nausea and vomiting. You may be prescribed medication in advance so you don’t experience the side effects, or so they’re reduced. It may take some time before you find a medication that works for you, so let your nurse or doctor know if you still have nausea after a few days taking the medication or if you’ve vomited for more than 24 hours.

Trying to eat as well as possible will help you recover sooner and cope better with the treatment and its side effects.

  • Eat a light meal before your treatment (e.g. soup and dry biscuits or toast), and drink as much fluid as possible.
  • Sip small amounts of liquid often, rather than trying to drink a lot at once. Sucking on ice cubes, ice-blocks  or jellies can also help to increase your fluid intake.
  • If your stomach is upset, try drinking fizzy drinks such as soda water or dry ginger ale.
  • If you wake up feeling sick, eat a dry biscuit or a slice of toast rather than skipping food altogether or forcing yourself to have a full meal.
  • Breathe deeply and gently through your mouth if you feel like you’re going to vomit.
  • If you’re nauseous or have vomited a lot, try to keep your fluids up so you don’t get dehydrated. If you aren’t able to keep fluids down, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Avoid strong odours and cooking smells.
  • Eat and drink slowly. Chew your food well to make it easier to digest.
  • Prepare meals between treatments and freeze them for the days you don’t feel like cooking.
  • Be flexible about your meals. Try to eat when you’re hungry, and don’t delay eating when you feel like it.
  • Eat small, frequent snacks instead of large meals.
  • If the taste of certain types of food has changed, don’t force yourself to eat them. Your sense of taste should return to normal after treatment ends, but it may take several weeks.
  • Speak to the hospital dietitian for advice about eating.

Hair loss

Many people having chemotherapy worry about hair loss. Some people lose all their hair quickly, others lose it after several treatments, and others may only lose a little hair or none at all.

When hair loss does occur, it usually starts 2 to 3 weeks after the first treatment and grows back when chemotherapy is completed. Your scalp may feel hot, itchy, tender or tingly before and while your hair is falling out. Some people find that the skin on their head is very sensitive, and they may develop pimples on their scalp.

Although losing head hair is most common, you may also lose hair from your eyebrows, eyelashes, arms, legs, chest and pubic region.

Whether or not you lose your hair depends on the drugs you receive. Some drugs don’t cause this side effect. Ask your doctor if this is a possible side effect and discuss how you can prepare for it.

It takes 4 to 12 months to grow back a full head of hair. When your hair first grows back, it may be a different colour or curly (even if you have always had straight hair). In time your hair usually returns to its normal condition.

Many people find losing their hair very difficult. You may feel that hair makes up a part of your overall image and its loss can make you feel physically unattractive, vulnerable or sad. It’s natural to feel this way. Talking to your medical team may be helpful.

  • Keep your hair and scalp very clean.
  • Use a mild shampoo like baby shampoo. If you want to use lotion on your head, use sorbolene. Check with your nurse before using any other hair or skin care products.
  • Comb or brush your hair gently using a large comb or hairbrush with soft bristles.
  • Wear a light cotton turban or beanie to bed if you’re cold at night, or to collect hair.
  • Use a cotton, polyester or satin pillowcase, as nylon can irritate your scalp.
  • If you prefer to leave your head bare, protect it against sunburn and the cold.
  • Make an appointment  with a hairdresser who can make your hair look as good as possible even if it’s thin or patchy.
  • Avoid perms and dyes, and limit the use of hair dryers, rollers and harsh products.
  • If your eyelashes fall out, wear glasses or sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and dust while outside.
  • Tell your nurse or doctor if the skin on your scalp is very sensitive, or if you have a lot of discomfort  and itchiness.
  • Wear a wig, toupee, hat, scarf or turban. Do whatever feels the most comfortable and gives you the most confidence.
  • Some hospitals or treatment centres have a wig library where you can borrow a wig if you need one. Ask your doctor or nurse for more information.
  • If you want to purchase a wig and you have private health insurance, check with your fund to see if you’re eligible for a rebate.

Call Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20 for assistance in finding a wig library or shop.

Skin problems

Your skin may darken, peel or become dry and itchy when you’re having chemotherapy. It’s also likely to be more sensitive to the sun. Protect your skin from the sun – especially between 10am and 3pm – by wearing high-protection sunscreen (SPF 30+), a hat and rotective clothing. This advice applies to everyone, but it’s even more important for people having chemotherapy.

  • Shower using a moisturising soap or sorbolene cream as a soap replacement.
  • After showering, gently pat your skin dry with a towel. Try not to rub your skin too hard.
  • Use a moisturising lotion or cream containing the ingredient urea to stop the dryness.
  • Dust cornflour over the itchy parts of your skin.
  • Wear loose, non-restrictive clothing. Choose cotton fabric instead of rough wool or synthetic fibres.
  • Wash your clothing in mild detergent for people with sensitive skin.
  • Stop shaving or waxing until your skin is completely healed.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • If your skin becomes red or sore in the area where the intravenous device went in, tell your doctor or nurse immediately.

Constipation or diarrhoea

Some chemotherapy drugs, pain relief medicines and anti-nausea drugs can cause constipation or diarrhoea. Tell your doctor or nurse if your bowel habits have changed.

After a bout of constipation or diarrhoea, eat a balanced diet with fresh fruits, vegetables, wholegrain bread and pasta.

  • Eat more high-fibre foods, such as wholegrain bread and pasta, bran, fruit and vegetables, nuts and legumes (e.g. baked beans or lentils).
  • Sometimes drinking fruit juice can help ease constipation. Try prune, apple or pear juice.
  • Drink plenty of other fluids, both warm and cold, to help loosen the bowels.
  • Do some light exercise, such as walking.
  • Don’t use enemas or suppositories. They’re not recommended for people having chemotherapy.
  • If you have constipation for more than a couple of days, let your doctor or nurse know. They may change your medication or give you other medication to relieve it.

  • Choose bland foods such as clear broth or boiled rice. Avoid spicy foods, wholegrain products, fatty or fried foods, rich gravies and sauces, and raw fruits or vegetables with skins or seeds.
  • Limit alcohol, fruit juice, soft drinks, strong tea or coffee and dairy products, as these may further stimulate the bowel.
  • Drink water to help replace the fluids lost through diarrhoea.
  • Diarrhoea can usually be treated at home with over-the-counter medication. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
  • If the diarrhoea becomes severe, it can cause dehydration and you may need to be admitted to hospital.

Mouth sores

Some chemotherapy drugs can cause mouth sores such as ulcers or infections. This is more likely if you have had or are having radiation to the head, neck or chest, or if you have dental or gum problems.

If you notice any change in your mouth or throat, such as sores, ulcers or thickened saliva, or if you find it difficult to swallow, contact your doctor. You should also discuss any dental problems with your doctor before seeing the dentist. If you need any dental work, tell your dentist you’re having chemotherapy.

  • Use a soft toothbrush to clean your teeth twice a day.
  • Don’t use commercial mouthwashes containing alcohol as they may dry out or irritate your mouth. Instead, try homemade mouthwash (1 tsp bicarbonate of soda or salt in a glass of warm water) at least four times a day. This helps keep your mouth clean, while the salt mouthwash helps heal mouth sores.
  • Sip fluids, especially water, and eat moist foods such as casseroles or soups if you have a dry mouth. Moisten foods with butter and sauces.
  • Try sucking on ice while you’re having intravenous chemotherapy to reduce mouth ulcers.
  • Blend foods to make them easier to eat.
  • Nourishing drinks such as milkshakes, smoothies and supplements add extra energy to your diet and feel soothing.
  • Avoid very hot foods, and spicy, acidic or coarse foods, (e.g. nuts or grains), as these can aggravate mouth sores.
  • Don’t smoke or drink alcohol, as this irritates tissue in the mouth.

Memory and concentration changes

Some people say they have trouble thinking clearly after chemotherapy. This is called cognitive impairment or, sometimes, ‘chemo brain’. You may find that it takes you more time to process information, or you may experience short-term memory loss or have trouble concentrating for long periods.

There’s some evidence that self-help techniques such as relaxation, exercise and memory games can be beneficial. You can also try focusing on activities that don’t require too much concentration. For example, you might choose to read magazines with short articles instead of books with several characters or complex storylines. Tell your doctor if this issue is affecting your day-to-day life.

  • Use a calendar to keep track of tasks, appointments, social commitments, birthdays, etc.
  • Write down things you have to remember. For example, make to-do lists or write down where you parked the car.
  • Learn something new, take up a new hobby, or do crosswords, word or number puzzles.
  • Plan activities to do things that require more concentration when you’re fresher, such as in the morning.
  • Get plenty of sleep. Deep sleep is important for memory and concentration.
  • Do light exercise each day as this may help you to clear your mind and sleep better.
  • Talk to others about how you’re feeling – for example, your partner or colleagues – to prevent misunderstandings and frustration.

Effects on the blood and immune system

Some chemotherapy drugs affect the bone marrow, which is the soft and spongy material inside the bones. The bone marrow makes three types of blood cells:

  1. red blood cells: carry oxygen throughout the body
  2. white blood cells: fight infection
  3. platelets: help blood to clot and prevent bruising.

The bone marrow’s job is to maintain normal levels of blood cells (your blood count) to keep you fit and healthy. When chemotherapy affects the bone marrow, your blood count is reduced. The count may fall with each treatment. This can cause problems such as anaemia, infections and bleeding problems, depending on the type of blood cell affected. Your health care team will do regular blood tests to make sure your blood cells return to normal levels before your next treatment.

A low red blood cell count is called anaemia. This can make you feel tired, lethargic, dizzy or breathless.

You may need a blood transfusion to build up your red blood cells and treat the anaemia.

Eating a nourishing diet with foods rich in iron and B vitamins is also important if you’re anaemic. Wholegrain breads and cereals, lean meat and green leafy vegetables are good sources of iron and vitamin B.

If white blood cell numbers drop during chemotherapy treatment, it can make colds and flu harder to shake off. Scratches and cuts may get infected easily or take longer to heal.

See your doctor if you’re unwell – even if you just have a cold. Sometimes doctors recommend taking antibiotics as a precaution against infection. If you’re having chemotherapy in winter, check with your doctor about having the flu vaccine.

You may have an injection of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) after chemotherapy if your doctor thinks it will be useful for you. It increases the number of neutrophils, which are a type of white blood cell that help protect against infection. If G-CSF is given, your doctor or nurse will speak to you about possible side effects. Some people may experience bone pain or tenderness at the injection site or show signs of an allergic reaction.

When to contact your doctor

Contact your doctor urgently if any of the following occur:

  • chills or sweats
  • a temperature of 38°C or more
  • persistent or severe vomiting
  • severe abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhoea
  • unusual bleeding
  • tenderness, redness or swelling around the site of the intravenous chemotherapy device
  • any serious unexpected side effects or sudden deterioration in health.

Also, contact your GP or treating specialist if you experience:

  • sweating, especially at night
  • sore throat
  • mouth ulcers
  • burning or stinging on passing urine easy bruising.

  • Keep a thermometer at home to check your temperature.
  • Some people having chemotherapy prefer to avoid crowded places such as shopping centres or public pools to reduce the risk of picking up an infection. This isn’t always practical, so use your commonsense.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water before preparing food and eating, and after using the toilet.
  • Use separate boards and utensils for raw and cooked foods, and clean thoroughly with hot, soapy water.
  • Leftover food should be stored in airtight containers in the fridge as soon as possible.
  • Store raw and cooked foods separately.
  • Try to eat freshly cooked or freshly prepared foods.
  • Don’t eat food or drinks past their use-by or best before dates.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables well, or peel where possible.
  • Avoid pre-made sandwiches, salads and takeaway foods; soft cheeses; raw or rare fish, meat and eggs; unpasteurised dairy products and soft-serve ice-creams.
  • Avoid people who are unwell, especially if they have the flu, conjunctivitis, measles, mumps, a cold sore or chickenpox.

Bleeding problems

A decrease in platelets can cause you to bleed for longer than normal after minor cuts or scrapes, or to bruise more easily. You may need a platelet transfusion if they’re low.

  • Be careful when using scissors, needles, knives or razors. Small cuts or nicks can harbour germs where an infection can start.
  • Use an electric razor to minimise the chance of nicking yourself.
  • Use a soft toothbrush to avoid irritating your gums.
  • Wear thick gloves when gardening to avoid injury, and to prevent infection from soil, which contains bacteria.
  • If you bleed, apply pressure for about 10 minutes and bandage, if appropriate.

Nerve and muscle effects

Some drugs can cause tingling and loss of sensation in your fingers and/or toes, and muscle weakness in your legs. If this happens, tell your doctor or nurse before your next treatment. Your treatment may need to be changed or the problem carefully monitored.

‘I had numbness and terrible pain in my hands from one drug. Doing exercises and soaking my hands in warm water helped. The doctors stopped that drug so the side effects wouldn’t become permanent.’ — Ann, ovarian cancer

Change in hearing

Some chemotherapy drugs can affect your hearing. You may lose some of your ability to hear high-pitched sounds. It can also cause a continuous ringing noise in the ears known as tinnitus. Let your doctor know if you notice any change in your hearing.

Sex and fertility

Chemotherapy may impact on your desire or ability to have sex because you feel tired or unwell. It may also affect sexual organs and functioning in both women and men. This can lead to a temporary or permanent effect on your ability to have children (your fertility).

Changes in sexuality

Many people have a range of worries that cause them to lose interest in sex while they’re having treatment. They may feel less confident about who they are and what they can do, or there may be a physical reason for not being able or ready to have sex. For example, vaginal dryness or erection difficulties are common issues after treatment.

Partners may also feel concerned about having sex – they might fear injuring the person with cancer or feel uncomfortable with the changes in their partner. If you have sex after receiving chemotherapy, you should take safety precautions.

Sexual intercourse may not always be possible, but closeness and sharing can still be a part of your relationship. Talk about how you’re feeling with your partner, and take time to adapt to any changes. Try to see yourself as a whole person (body, mind and personality) instead of focusing only on what has changed.

Changes in fertility

It’s best for you and your partner to talk to your doctor about how chemotherapy might affect you personally and what options are available if you want to have children in the future. Women may be able to store eggs (ova) and men may be able to store sperm for use at a later date. This needs to be done before chemotherapy starts.

Effects on women

Some women’s periods become irregular during chemotherapy but return to normal after treatment. For other women, chemotherapy may cause periods to stop completely (menopause). After menopause, women can’t have children by natural means. The signs of menopause include hot flushes, sweating – especially at night – and dry skin.

Menopause – particularly if it’s early (before age 40) – may cause bones to become weaker and break more easily. This is called osteoporosis.

Talk to your doctor about medication to treat the symptoms of menopause.

For more information about pregnancy and chemotherapy, see the main Chemotherapy page.

Effects on men

Chemotherapy drugs may lower the number of sperm produced and reduce their ability to move. This can sometimes cause infertility, which may be temporary or permanent.

The ability to get and keep an erection may also be affected but this is usually temporary. If the problem is ongoing, seek medical advice.

Although chemotherapy reduces fertility, it’s still possible for some women to become pregnant while having chemotherapy, and a man having chemotherapy could still make his partner pregnant.

Chemotherapy drugs can harm an unborn baby, so women shouldn’t become pregnant during the course of chemotherapy, and men shouldn’t father a child. Should you or your partner become pregnant, talk to your treating doctor immediately.

The type of birth control you choose will depend on what you and your partner are comfortable using. Ask your doctor for advice about the best type of birth control method for you. Some people choose to use barrier contraception (e.g. condoms), which provide protection against any cytotoxic drug by-products that may be secreted in body fluids. Young women may be prescribed the Pill as a contraceptive and to help protect the ovaries from the effects of chemotherapy.

Well, this is a long list of possible side effects from the use of chemotherapy. While reading a list is one thing, experiencing all of these is quite different. From my opinion, the main issue with Chemotherapy as a cancer cure is that the drugs are extremely toxic and when you take them leave a toxic residue in the body.

This can lead to long term damage at the very least, and one has to weigh up the benefits and permanent harm caused when using these drugs. Our opinion is that any toxins are bad for your future health. Evidence is that toxins are a major cause of cancer and that toxins left in the body after treatment may well cause a secondary cancer in the future.

There is no doubt that survival rates are improving, and the issue there is that there is little research on the many natural cancer treatments. Some of these are also toxic, while others such as activated liquid zeolite focus on removing toxins from the body, and raising pH. This starves the cancer of the environment required to spread and the zeolite can actually enter the cancer cells and kill them without harming healthy cells. When pH is raised above 7.5, it is known that cancer c ells have trouble thriving, and removal of the toxins that cause the disease makes perfect sense.

Some alternate or complementary therapies are worth exploring whether or not you use chemotherapy, as removing the toxins and balancing pH can reduce the side effects of the drugs resulting in a better lifestyle than if you nothing but take medication.
